Plastic pollution is not a single problem with a single solution. It is the outcome of decades of economic growth, changing lifestyles, social norms, global supply chains and uneven access to waste infrastructure.
PISCES Relay exists to help governments, communities and industries navigate this complexity by translating world-class research into practical, scalable action.
We bring together scientists, designers, policymakers, businesses and community groups to experiment, test, adapt and deliver solutions where they are needed most – in rapidly changing coastal and urban regions across the Global South… and beyond.
What we do is grounded in evidence but shaped by local knowledge. What we build is practical, but designed to scale. What we aim for is not one-off projects, but adaptive systems that last.
What we do
We combine systems-based science with real-world innovation to design and test solutions that reduce plastic pollution at its source. Our work spans systems analysis, behavioural insight, Living Lab interventions, enterprise innovation, environmental monitoring and decision-support tools.

While much of our work is rooted in Indonesia and the wider Southeast Asia region, our methods and tools are designed to be transferable across diverse contexts.
We work with practitioners, organisations and industries to build interventions that reflect local realities while contributing to global learning.
PISCES Relay Case Study Sites
From these sites – and in collaboration with national partners — we conduct:
- detailed plastic waste and litter monitoring and impact assessments
- Living lab behaviour change programmes
system analysis across the plastic value chain - identification of the most effective intervention points
- evaluation of environmental, economic, social and cultural outcomes
- circular plastics economy training programmes
This multi-scale approach enables PISCES Relay to generate insights that are locally grounded, nationally scalable, and globally transferable.
Who we are
PISCES Relay currently operates through a research-led coalition of scientists, practitioners, policymakers, designers, industry, business and NGO partners and community organisations across the UK, Indonesia and the wider Global South. We work across disciplines and sectors to develop solutions that are co-created, owned and sustained by the people and institutions who will carry them forward.
